How does Diabetes affect your eyes?

Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in diabetics caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye that converts light rays into electrical impulses to your brain allowing vision.

Diabetes can destroy the blood vessels in the retina needed for vision. Early stages of diabetic retinopathy (non-proliferative) may cause some blurring of vision or may not cause any symptoms.

Late stages (proliferative) can lead to more severe bleeding, retinal swelling, retinal detachment or scarring, and blindness. Therefore, at least an annual examination is critical if you have been diagnosed with Stage I or II diabetes.
